Your cooling system is responsible for absorbing the tremendous amount of heat generated by the engine. It needs to stay in top condition so it can manage curiculating the heat, dispensing the heat, and most importantly controlling the heat. Proper cooling system maintenance is necessary for preventing damage caused by corrosion, scaling, and liner pitting. You should properly clean your cooling system whenever it's drained for routine maintenance or drained due to a related failure.
Fleetguard makes two types of cooling system cleaners.
Fleetguard Restore is an alkaline based product and is great for cleaning your system of silicate gel, oil or grease. If there is rust, scale, or corrosion present, then
Fleetguard Restore Plus is a better option since it's acid based.
The Steps for Proper Cooling System Cleaning
- Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for safety when working on equipment
- Drain the cooling system and properly dispose of old coolant
- Immediately add 1 gallon of cleaner for each 10 gallons of cooling system capacity
- Fill the system with tap water
- Turn on the cab heater switch to high to allow maximum cooloant flow through the heater core
- Run engine at normal operating temperature (at least 185 degrees F) for 60-90 minutes
- Drain cooling system and refill again with tap water
- Run the engine at normal operating temperature for 5 about minutes
- Drain cooling system and refill with new Fleetguard ES Compleat 50/50 Premix Coolant or other Fleetguard Coolant
- Install new coolant filter suitable for the system capacity
- Be sure to turn off cab heater
Note:The performance of Restore and Restore Plus is dependent on time, temperature and concentration levels. An extremely scaled or flow restricted system, for example, may require higher concentrations of cleaners, higher temperatures, or longer cleaning time. Restore and Restore Plus can be used safely up to twice the recommended concentration levels. Extremely scaled or fouled systems may require more than one cleaning.
